Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Dade Phelan has set his priorities for the upcoming legislative session, set to begin in January of 2025.
Phelan’s top three priorities include job creation and economic development, fiscal conservatism and budget scrutiny, and improving education.
The Speaker’s plan to address job creation and economic development will place an emphasis on Rural Texas. Furthermore, the Speaker will look to pass legislation to bring jobs back to Texas that have, in the past, been transferred overseas.
Phelan will also guide the House in an effort to reduce the “size and scope of government, prioritizing spending and cutting waste, and focusing resources on the Texans most in need,” according to a readout provided by the Speaker’s office.
Lastly, Speaker Phelan will work closely with the Governor, Lt. Governor, and the Senate to improve education, with “a strong focus on school choice.” School choice was a priority of Gov. Abbott last session, but the effort failed.
This effort to focus on school choice appears, at first glance, to be a peace offering to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick after the tumult created by the impeachment and subsequent acquittal of state Attorney General Ken Paxton.
